Meeting Minutes

April 8, 2008

Attendees:  Johnny McFarland, Mike Borden, Evelyn Shultz, Matt Schultz, Terry Baskin, Jurey Howard, Steve Sellers, Ken Blackman, Neil Mace, Charles Harris, Doug Boone

Old Business

Last minutes (or lack there of) approved.

Treasurer report (Mike Borden)
Chapter’s current financial situation is OK even with the unexpected tractor repair expenses.

Web Page Report (Evelyn Schultz)
Preventing the occurrence of spam and other non-QU related traffic on the chapter’s web and discussion page may require us to change from the webmaster currently utilized.  Additionally, members need to contact Evelyn via email to re-register for the chapter’s discussion page.

Training Grounds Report (Guy Joyner)
Boy Scout Troop 265 participated in a work day at the training grounds on March 27.  The troop cleaned ditches and repaired the entrance gate.  The troop will be back out at the grounds on the 12th and 13th of April to remove rubble and various other maintenance activities.  Johnny McFarland and the chapter expressed their appreciation to Matt Shultz and Troop 265 for their work at the training grounds.

Habitat Management Report (Guy Joyner)
Seed distribution will likely be held on the 19th of April.  100% of the milo ordered has been received.  Distribution of the lespedeza seed will have to be allocated as only 1000 lbs of the 1650 lbs ordered has been received.  Fulfillment of seed orders by the state has been slow at best, so seed distribution may be limited to the milo and lespedeza.

Guy and the chapter expressed their appreciation to Billy Mclemore who is donating his short trailer to the chapter.

Sporting Clays Report (Johnny McFarland in John Campbell’s absence)
John Campbell is seeking volunteers to help with the Sporting Clays event which is scheduled for August 30 at the Willows.  Please contact John with your availability.

Additional Information
Johnny McFarland mentioned that Larry Rea, host of Larry Rea Outdoors on AM 790 radio will be the guest speaker at our next chapter meeting, May 13 at Bass Pro Shop.  The focus of our May 13 meeting will be on our upcoming Sporting Clays shoot, which is our major fundraising event.

Johnny also provided information on Budweiser’s “Adopt-a-Covey” program and asked that chapter members pass the information on to interested parties.

New Business

Steve Sellers commented on a recent article in the Commercial Appeal that discussed dogs abandoned by hunters.  He contacted Commercial Appeal’s Brian Brashord and invited him to a QU meeting to meet hunters that consider their dogs as family members in addition to hunting partners.

Ken Blackman mentioned that he will be chairing an exhibit on bird dogs during “Heritage Day” at Ames Plantation in October and is seeking volunteers the help him with the exhibit.
